spaces nov 24

For today's prompt, write a spaces poem. Your poem could involve white space, outer space, inner space, a parking space, the space between one day and the next, or something other type of spacing. Allow yourself enough space to play around.

Most mornings I curse the cigar smoker, scowl into the sun, and look to the sparrows looking for scraps as the bright spot in the commute.

If I'm lucky, there is a 4 year old excited about everything to shout about each station and body of water we traverse on the way to the office. his parents are apologetic but he's our best defense against drudgery.

sometimes, there are drunks waiting with me at the station to interrupt my reading and ask me about the smell of fried chicken on the wind. Other days the wind picks up my skirt and the fishermen at the foot of the station by the pequonnock get a little show. or ferrets wait patiently, or I look for oysters and barnacles on the sides of the building. some days and boyfriend and girlfriend drink to much and fight publicly, or someone vomits or leaves a newspaper, a coffee cup, an emptied beer bottle that slides along the floor and rattles us.

But really, a lot of the time we are quiet together, staring at machines or books or paperwork, or sleeping as our bodies rumble/hurtle/slide across a landscape on metal sliders and electricity. A lot of the time we sit together but we aren't together, we slither along in monotony and workdeath. we forget what a wonder it is that someone invented this machine to glide us across a landscape, we forget a person is driving us, we forget to thank the machines and humans that made it possible.

So I love the holidays:
some of the best train times everyone is loaded up with treats, luggage, new york city pets (so well groomed, so well-behaved)& excitement.

We share a space with each other and with our anticipation for eating, sharing & love. more than the food or the presents, this makes me happy
and the conductors advise us not to take up valuable seat-space with our pies. the possibilities of our collective hopes, wishes, meals, and fun thrum in the space so we are a club of possibility.

Between your hip bone and spine
there is a space that sometimes wears
glasses and likes the earth.
Sometimes there is pretty dancing
and unique dancing in this space,
but ultimately there is the Biggest
Loser losing space which could mean more
coffee for you. Mountains
beyond mountains, asleep in the space.
